What to Write in a Christmas Card
It’s Christmas card season! If you’re anything like me, you know looking through your address book and finding the right words to say for everyone can be a daunting task. Whether it’s for a friend, family, a coworker, or someone who is going through a difficult time, here’s some help on how to get started! I hope these sentiments can inspire your season’s greetings!
For friends: The holidays are a great time of year to reflect on meaningful friendships and let them know how much you appreciate them. Here are a few messages to send some love to friends this Christmas:
-
Your friendship is the greatest Christmas gift I could ever receive! Thank you for always being there for me when I needed you the most. I hope your holiday is filled with everything great! Let’s get together soon!!
- My holidays are always filled with joy because I have you! Wish we could be together today, wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas!
-
They say that friends are the family you choose, and I would choose you time and time again. Merry Christmas!
And don’t be afraid to sprinkle a little humor here and there…
-
I hope this Christmas you can finally get the relaxation you deserve! It must be exhausting being as fabulous as you are!
-
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas… but if the white runs out I’ll drink the red! Cheers bestie! Merry Christmas!
For a coworker: You see your coworkers nearly everyday, and sometimes they can start to feel like family! Letting them know you appreciate all they do and wishing them well deserved time off is a great way to lift up your teammates and create a supportive environment around the office! If you’re not sure if they celebrate Christmas, you can always just wish them a happy holiday instead.
- Couldn’t have survived this quarter without you! Thank you for always being there for me right when I needed you most! I hope you enjoy the holidays off and can spend lots of quality time with your family!
- Merry Christmas work bestie! Your constant support and trust means the world to me. Thank you so much for everything you do! Wishing you lots of relaxation during your holiday break!
- You’re a constant source of brightness and cheer in the office, and I’m so grateful for your endless positivity! Wishing you a fun filled holiday, enjoy your time off!
For family: One approach to sending a Christmas card to family, is to try reminiscing about shared holiday memories or traditions! This is also a great time to let them know you’re thinking of them if they won’t be home for the holidays.
- I’ll never forget the Christmas when (insert memory). I hope this year is just as special! To memories and family, Merry Christmas!
- Every year I think to myself how lucky I am to have spent all these holidays with you! Here’s to dozens more, love you lots!
- It’s not Christmas without you helping me bake cookies! We’ll miss you this year! Hugs from afar!
Here’s a formula you can apply to your own personal family: “You know it’s Christmas time when…”
Examples:
- You know it’s Christmas time when Uncle Joe turns into Bing Crosby!
- You know it’s Christmas time when racing to get one of Mia’s Heath Bar cookies becomes an olympic event!
For someone going through a difficult time: For many people, the holidays don’t always feel as merry as they should. Maybe they’re going through the loss of a loved one, illness, financial troubles, or can’t make it home for the holidays. Whatever it may be, it’s good to let them know you’re thinking of them as they navigate a complicated and stressful time.
- I know this year has been challenging, but I’m hopeful that the new year will bring upon brightness, purpose, and healing for you! Sending you so much love! Merry Christmas!
- Thinking of you extra this Christmas. I hope you can be gentle on yourself during this difficult time. Always here to support and love you!
-

- There’s nothing I would want more than to give you a big hug right now! But since we can’t be together this year, I hope this card gives you all the love and warmth even if we're afar. Happy holidays and here’s to hoping for a better year ahead.
- May God fill your life with love, peace, and joy this Christmas and throughout the coming New Year!
- May His light shine brightly onto you this Christmas! Wishing you a blessed holiday full of love!
- God gave His greatest gift to us on that first Christmas Day and may the wonder of it always guide and light your way. Merry Christmas!
Still not sure where to start? It’s ok to keep it short and sweet! Here’s a few simple sentiments that get the job done:
